Woohoo, it's Blog Gem time! For those of you new to my blog, each month I find out about the face behind a favourite blog or website of mine, in this little interview series. This month I have the great pleasure of interviewing the duo team that is, The New Crafty Society!
Hello there! Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
We both grew up in Germany and met at secondary school over there - we used to knit on the school bus together! We’ve remained friends ever since and decided to set up our craft blog together a couple of years ago. Around six months after setting up we won the Cosmopolitan Best Craft Blog award which was amazing. Since then we’ve moved to London and now work on our blog and business together full time. We’re currently working on bringing out our first products which is exciting! The first two will be a knicker making kit and an English Paper Piecing cushion kit.
What are your creative spaces like?
Cluttered! We both live in quite small spaces so they’re full of fabric and wool and half-finished projects. Hannah does all of her creating in her room in a shared flat and Rosie recently moved on to a boat which has made space (and electricity for the sewing machine!) pretty tricky. Now that we have an office/studio space too though, we’ll start to do lots of our creating there.
If you had to take only one craft tool to a desert island, what would you each choose and why?
Hannah - I’d take a knitting needle so I could spear fish with it. But also knit a blanket.
Rosie - I’d take an amazing pair of scissors. You could kill stuff with them and cut down coconuts or something?
How do you both work and get inspired?
We both read a lot of blogs and see what everyone else is making. For sewing projects we love SallyOh, What Katie Does and Ada Spragg. For other craft projects we get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest. Oh and we like trying to recreate clothes that we see in shops! One of our favourite brands is House of Hackney and we love using their fabrics to make clothes.
What top tips would you give to anyone starting a blog?
Make friends with other bloggers. Comment on their posts, tweet them, meet them in person, anything! They’ll give you the best advice and building a community of like-minded people is one of the best things about blogging.
Is there a story behind the name 'The New Craft Society'?
Rosie went to Germany to visit Hannah after we’d graduated from university in 2013. We both hadn’t really been able to find jobs and were spending a lot of our time crafting. It was on a car drive to a local town that we decided to set up a blog and were just bouncing name ideas back and forth and The New Craft Society stuck!
If you could go to a Creative Blog Award dinner with any 5 people and/or fictional characters (dead or alive), who would you each choose?
Hannah - Sally from Sally Oh, Sophie from Ada Spragg, Katie from What Katie Does, Elisalex from By Hand London and Madalynne. Or just Patrick Grant.
Rosie - William Morris, Kaffe Fassett, Jane Burden, May Morris. I can’t think of a fifth!
And finally...if you had to choose one song to represent 'The New Craft Society', what would you each choose and why?
That’s too hard! Something by ABBA probably.
Aw, thanks so much ladies! It's been wonderful hearing all about your creative world! What super advice for starting a blog. There is indeed a whole friendly, community out there!
I hope you've all liked this month's Blog Gem. Catch up on all my previous interviews here.
