Blog Gem - Little Birdie
Yay! It's Blog Gem time! This month I have the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Little Birdie blogger. This blog ticks all the boxes for me. The style and layout, the inspirational posts, the amazing photography. It's all there and more! So, lets find out more. Hello there, who be the face behind the blog?
Hello there, I'm Jen. I'm a thirty something blogger from Leeds. I'm originally from Glasgow but I married a Yorkshireman and we share our little terrace house with our 9 year old son and a big fat 13 year old tabby cat. I work part time as a Market Gardener but I've previously worked in bookselling and arts management. I blog about colourful interiors, vintage style, vegetarian cooking, baking and lovely finds I stumble upon. I have a couple of regular series on the blog, 52 Weeks of Happy and My Vintage Life. And just recently I've started a new series of Interviews with crafters, designers and independent sellers to highlight some fantastic talents.
What's your creative space like?
I have a tiny corner in my bedroom that I use for writing and making. I have surrounded myself with some of my favourite artwork, fabrics, prints and postcards. I've just treated myself to my new yellow chair, so it's all very bright and happy. I think it's very important to have a place just for you.
If you had to take only one of your crafts to a desert island what would it be and why?
Truthfully, I don't really do a lot of crafting as I'm not very good at it! I have terribly shaky hands so I prefer to cook and bake. But I have enjoyed turning these embroidery hoops into pieces of art simply by popping a bit of vintage fabric in them. And I have recently acquired a sewing machine so we'll see what happens with that for future craft projects. I'd love to be able to make cushions and my own clothes.
How do you work and get inspired?
Writing a blog can take up a lot of time and as I'm juggling parenthood and work too it means sometimes I do struggle to keep up with things. But I do try and set aside a little time each day to write or to read other bloggers. I get inspired by Pinterest, reading a great novel, hearing a new song on the radio or being out at a gallery and of course by lots of other fantastic blogs. I'm also hugely influenced by the seasons, as I love taking pictures of nature. This also influences what I cook and bake with too. And most importantly I get inspiration from my son!
What top tips would you give to novice bloggers?
Write about what you like and what you love. Post often and visit other blogs that you enjoy reading. It's great to comment on their blogs too as it's a great way to introduce yourself. I think it's also a good idea to have a Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook page too as they are all fantastic tools to connect with others. But most importantly just enjoy it. It's a space to call your own and to inspire you.
Is there a story behind the name Little Birdie?
I always loved the expression 'A little birdie told me', and that's actually what the blog was first called. But after I'd written a few posts I realised that there were a few other blogs out there with the same name. It was pretty much a rookie error as I hadn't given it much thought or taken this blogging thing very seriously! However, as I'd already named it and had a few followers I just decided to keep it but I did simplify it to just Little Birdie. And I do still like it, so it stays!
If you could go to a Creative Blog Award dinner with any 5 people/fictional characters (dead or alive), who would you choose?
Well in no particular order they would have to be: Ray Eames, Frida Kahlo, Tina Fey, Woody Allen and Jack Lemmon.
And finally...Book and Tea or Film and Wine?
Ha! I'd have to say both, although not tea as I don't like it, so it's coffee and a book. I am an avid reader and always have been. I love crime novels, contemporary fiction and I've just finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird. As for film, I adore comedies, Date Night is a recent favourite. And perfect with a big old glass of red. x
Thanks so much Jen! It's been fab getting to know you and the world behind your blog. I couldn't agree more about having a little creative space to call your own. I think it's very important and I adore your new yellow chair! I've never seen Date Night but will definitely check it out. Ooh and Frida Kahlo - I LOVE her, so might have to ask if she'd nip over to my table too! :-) Thanks again Jen!
I hope you all enjoyed this month's Blog Gem. Stay tuned for more Blog Gems as I've got some awesome ones lined up. Until then, head over to Little Birdie and fall in love with Jen's blog!
