Blog Gem - Onetenzeroseven

Hello everyone and happy Thursday! It's Blog Gem time...a chance to get a sneaky peek into a creative blogger's world. I LOVE this lady's blog and beautiful, beautiful designs, which you can find here and here! Just look at this one, utterly gorgeous! So, who's the person behind these stunning earrings...

Hi, I'm Sophie and I've spent my whole life living in Yorkshire. Despite being desperate to see the world and wanting to spend some time living in the various cities I have fallen in love with, I am so proud to be a Yorkshire girl and this will always be my home.

I'm a designer of things! Clothes, websites, jewellery... amongst a million other outlets! I try to cram in as much stuff as humanly possible into my 24 hour day, which usually ends up with me faffing and panicking for most of it, but I wouldn't have it any other way ;)

My boyfriend is a musician and we struggle to cram all of our equipment into our little terraced house just outside the city centre, along with our crazy rescue dog, Frank.

What's your design space/studio/work area like?
For my day job I work in a pretty grim area of Leeds where the rent is cheap! I do have my own office that is pretty much a life sized Pinterest board; every inch of wall is covered in magazine clippings, sketches, notes, photographs and other miscellany and I listen to music all day long.

At home I share our spare room/studio with my boyfriend so we're forever tripping over each other's cables & guitars or treading on my jewellery findings that have escaped onto the floor! Ouchie!

I long for a big house where we can have a music studio in the basement and a separate craft room with custom storage!! But until then I usually end up spreading my work all over the living room floor.

If you had to take only one of your crafts to a desert island, what would it be and why?
At this moment in my life, it would probably be photography. Despite having owned a DSLR for almost 2 years, I'm still such a novice. I have books and bookmarks full of stuff to learn and practice and an endless list of accessories to aquire, unfortunately I don't have the time to sit down and soak it all in. Being deserted on an island with just my camera sounds like heaven to me right now ;) plus I never tire of taking photos, much to other's people's annoyance I'm sure.

How do you work and get inspired?
Music. I cannot explain to the extent that I need music just to breathe! I can get inspired by a lyric or fall into the zone listening to a great record. The album I currently owe most of my genius moments to is Give Me My Change by Young Hines. Last week I woke up early and put the record on and in one hour I had done more designing than in the entire week previous. It's like the passion from the music just fills me with this unquenchable desire to create.

Aside from music I like to saturate myself with the things I love.. I drink way too much tea, pin up photographs of the people & places I adore and read inspirational blogs and quotes. I am inspired by everything from walking my dog in the park to watching the rain fall from my attic window. There is literally endless beauty in your daily life!

What top tips would you give to any novice bloggers and/or those thinking of selling their designs?
THE most important tip I could ever share is to be determined and realise that it's not going to happen overnight. You've got to work at it and then you've got to work at it some more and when you are absolutely exhausted and frustrated... you've got to work at it some more! ;) It's hard and no-one tells you that! Everyone is always full of words of encouragement, but no-one sits you down and explains that you're setting off down a long road. It won't always be that way, though. "If you build it, they will come."

As for blogging... I'm still a novice myself! But when I started out I looked for blog after blog and I read them all! I took their advice, I followed their e-courses and I sat down and thought about what I wanted my blog to be before I even wrote a single word. I have blogger idols and I aspire to be as successful as them, but not to be like them, because it is imperative that a blogger is his or herself above all. No-one wants to read about you pretending to be someone else.

Is there a story behind the name 'onetenzeroseven'?
I remember sitting down and coming up with onetenzeroseven, but it was just a username back then. I never actively thought of a name for my online jewellery business or for my blog, I just named them after my online alter-ego! Which thinking about it now is perfect, because everything I do online is a real piece of me and it allows me to develop into anything I want. It's universal.

The name itself stands for 1/10/07 which is the day I went on my first date with my now boyfriend. *Blush*.

If you could be given an award for your designs by any person/fictional character (dead or alive), who would it be?
I have many idols who I would love to or would have loved to meet, but my Nan would win hands down. Sadly my Nan died when I was 11, but up until then she was most definitely my third parent and I learned so much from her. I would love to think that she was proud of me, so much of who she was is inside of me and pours out into my work. She is my ultimate idol.

And & tea or music & wine?
Tea & music!! A good cup of Yorkshire Tea and a great record under the needle and you've got yourself a party at the onetenzeroseven household right there! :)

Ooh yes, tea and music, great combination and something I indulge in all day long too...Thanks so much for stopping by Sophie, it's been fab getting a glimpse into your world. That's very good advice about keeping at it with blogging and selling your designs. This particular road is certainly full of peaks and troughs but when it's good, it's really good and well worth remembering those moments when those bad days crop up.

I hope you've all enjoyed this month's Blog Gem. Stay tuned for more!
